Pill-Reading Corner: Umberto Eco – The Name of the Rose
- by Daniel Pawlik
“Not all truths are for all ears.” Umberto Eco – The Name of the Rose
He was once asked in an interview: where on the body would be the best place to have a third eye? Umberto’s answer was brilliant in its simplicity – at the tip of the index finger.
I would like to say that “The Name of the Rose” is brilliant and simple. It is brilliant, but not simple. It is a mix of the Middle Ages, monks, murder, theology, and philosophy. There is something for everyone.
A kind of treatise on the control of knowledge and belief through the suppression of uncomfortable facts. In this case, it concerns the second volume of Aristotle’s Poetics, the book that forms the central plot of the novel.
A small allegory about how each of us carries different monks within us, just like a rose, which besides its beauty also has thorns.
For those who have a little less time, I recommend the film adaptation with a great performance by Sean Connery.
Finally, let's look at the opinions of other readers from lubimyczytac.pl and see how this story resonates with different audiences.
In my collection, this book is a masterpiece. An old 14th-century Benedictine monastery forms the setting of “The Name of the Rose”. Two monks from the British Isles are sent to Italy to solve the dark mystery surrounding murders in the old monastery. The tension is built with surgical precision, and the film adaptation further enhances the plot.

Demanding, but incredibly rewarding. Crime, philosophy, and medieval flair—all united. It requires concentration, but the reward is immense.

My first encounter with Eco's work, and to this day one of the best books I have ever read. One either loves or hates an author's work (at least that's what my observations and discussions about his work suggest), and I belong to the former category.

Bookcase Ideas – How to Choose and Style a Bookshelf for Your Living Room
